The Irish have St. Patrick’s day, the British just had the royal wedding, and the Dutch have Queensday, which is the biggest annual celebration in the Netherlands. This year we kicked off a new tradition in LA: by celebrating the birthday of the Queen of the Netherlands, a day of national unity and “saamhorigheid” (togetherness).
This royal national holiday in the Netherlands and the kingdom’s other constituent countries, Aruba, Curacao and Sint Maarten, is celebrated on the 30th of April. Dutch people came together and wore orange as a tribute to the Royal Family – the House of Orange.
Brennan’s Pub was transformed into an ‘Amsterdam Bruin Café’ to experience the Orange Craze.
Some got a sample of the special menu: Traditional Dutch Barfood like ‘bitterballen’ (Beef bites) and Fries Dutch Style – served with mayonnaise, ketchup and finely chopped raw onions, Dutch Cheese the ‘jonge boerenkaas’ kind. Speculaas and drop. Party goers got a feel of the Dutch ‘gezelligheid’ and camaraderie. An unfortunate mishap (of the bitter kind), 500 bitterballen got stuck in the Fedex network, but thanks to the Consulate Office LA we could at least serve 96 ballen that where gone in a blink of an eye.
Special thanks to the sponsors: Honorary Consul LA, Heineken, KetelOne, Branding Personality, Danko Foods, Shoops Delicatessen.
